I claudius book review. Even if you normally dislike historical fiction i suspect you will enjoy i, claudius. Click here to see the rest of this review A sequel, it carries on from where the earlier book left off, but it is complete in itself, and can stand on its own merits.
This book may be about claudius life and his account of the major events and people in his life, but the wealth of information about roman life is impressive. The book has been awarded with james tait black memorial prize for fiction (1934), hawthornden prize (1935) and many others. As a novel it's also wonderful.
One of the best works of robert graves. As a history lesson, it's fabulous; The entire book is really very interesting claudius is constantly trying to reveal the truth, or just record it, while evading trouble, often by very narrow margins.
While you did get all the intrigue surrounding claudius, it wasnt at the expense of the quality of information in this autobiography by claudius. Livia, claudius's grandmother, is one of the stars of the novel. His story continues in claudius the god.

Published in multiple languages including english, consists of 468 pages and is available in paperback format for offline reading.
The robert graves novel i, claudius begins with a depiction of the title character as a child. In the sequel to i, claudius, graves selective use of historical fact in the construction of the characters in his novel also affects his presentation of claudius. Fictionized biography of a roman emperor, who lived at a strategic period in the history of the empire.
Claudius never wanted to be emperor. According to claudius, the existence of the text was prophesied by the sibyl at cumae, who declared that claudius would speak clear in. Performances from each cast member carry the story across its several episodes without an annoying voice to fear or a slurred speech to stumble.
Best is claudius himself, the stutterer who let everyone think he was an idiot (to avoid getting poisoned) but who reveals himself in the narrative to be a wry and likable observer. I claudius is a work of recreated autobiography, telling the life story of a reluctant roman emperor. But the book has been on my tbr pile for a long time, because, of course, i expected the book to be even better.
I, claudius was one of the dark horse surprises of 1934. I think i prefer the t.v. Though the narrative is largely fictionalized, most of the events.

Robert graves novel opens with claudius (or tiberius claudius drusus nero germanicus) introducing himself and describing his personal motivation for writing this autobiography. The book is full of politics, plots, crimes, murders, and plenty of drama both small and grand in scale. Claudius, the god is, if possible, an even better book.
